The New York Rangers on the heels of the success of another New York hockey team was formed, the New York Americans in the NHL. The Americans had proven that hockey could be successful in New York, Madison Square Garden president leading GI "Tex want to" Rickard, another Team bring to the garden.
The team was initially known as the New York Giants, but the media they described as "Tex's Rangers." Rickard took the name and ran with it, it formally adopting the marketing team uniforms.
The Rangers were successful in their early years. They won the Stanley Cup in every decade from the 20s to the 40s, winning all three.
In 1942, folded the New York Americans, so the only Rangers hockey team in New York. From 1942 to 1967, the Rangers one of the six teams in the NHL left. The six teams would have been forever known as the "Original Six".
The Rangers were not very successful in the Original Six era. From 1943 to 1955, the Rangers made the playoffs only twice. The second time turned out to be A Cinderella Story as the Rangers all advanced the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. You would lose the series to Detroit in a dramatic Game 7, the two extensions presented.
Since the Original Six era was over, the Rangers had to be one of the league top team. Starting with the last Original Six 1966/67 season made the Rangers the playoffs in nine consecutive years.
The Rangers have become perennial contenders in the NHL for the first time in almost 30 years. They correspond to the Stanley Cup Finals in advanced in 1972, losing to the Boston Bruins (Another member of the Original Six). They returned to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1979 after defeating a heavily favored New York Islanders team in the semifinals. They lost in the finals to a Six other original member, the Montreal Canadiens in a five-game series.
The Rangers continue to be a very successful team, but each season ended with them go home without the Stanley Cup. After winning three Cups during their early years, they had gone to a drought their fans eager for a return to the Top left.
All the pieces came together in 1994. The team had acquired the future Hall-of-Fame center Mark Messier from the Edmonton Oilers and he made immediate Contributions. He saved the Rangers against the elimination of New Jersey Devils in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals with three goals in the third period. They went to Game 7 in a double Overtime thriller to win, deserve the chance to play against the Vancouver Canucks in the final. They defeated the Canucks in seven games, giving them their fourth Stanley Cup and first in 54 years.
Wayne Gretzky, the greatest hockey player ever, the New York Rangers is his last stop before retirement. He played there for three seasons, helping them advance to the Eastern Conference Finals 1997th Gretzky finished his career as a Ranger on 18th April 1999.
The team has for the playoffs the last four seasons and made a team seems to be on the rise. Last season was a year of transition season for them, as they brought in new coach John Tortorella. Despite change of coaching, the Rangers made the playoffs and yet it almost upset the heavily favored Washington Capitals in the first round.
