Sharks 6 – Canadiens 4

We’re on the playoff stretch and that was more than apparent in tonight’s game. The Sharks struck first as Patrick Marleau beat Carey Price on a 2-on-1. The Habs tied the game only seconds later with a goal from Tomas Plekanec before San Jose took the lead back as Joe Thornton scored after Brian Smolinski accidentally knocked Price down. The Sharks enjoyed a two-man advantage in the middle of the period and Carey Price shut them down repeatedly including several fantastic saves in a sitting position. The Canadiens tied the game on a powerplay shortly after as Ryan O’Byrne put a wrist shot in the Sharks’ net from the point.

Thornton scored again early in the second period to give the Sharks another lead only to have Tomas Plekanec net his second of the game 10 minutes later to tie it up 3-3. A slapshot from the point by Jody Shelly took a strange bounce off of the stick of Carey Price and ended up in the net late in the period to give the Sharks a 4-3 lead.

Jonathon Cheechoo scored early in the third to give San Jose a two-goal lead but Maxim Lapierre cut it back down to a one goal game only seconds later. The Habs fought for that tying goal but Brian Campbell sealed the deal late in the period on the powerplay to put the Sharks up 6-4.

GAME NOTES: Ottawa lost to Anaheim today and Boston got creamed 10-2 by the Capitals. Carey Price stopped 33 of 39 shots; I expect Halak will start against the Coyotes on Thursday.
