Habs Pick Up Glen Metropolit From Flyers

Glen MetropolitBob Gainey announced today that the Canadiens have picked up Glen Metropolit on waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers today, adding a gritty veteren to the Montreal centre lineup. Bob’s statement:

I said yesterday that one one of our needs was to acquire a centre to add depth to our group composed of Saku Koivu, Tomas Plekanec, Maxim Lapierre and Kyle Chipchura,” GM Bob Gainey said in a team release.

“This presented itself in the past few hours when the Flyers placed Glen Metropolit on waivers. Glen is an experienced player who played very well against us (for the Boston Bruins) last season in the playoffs. We’re very happy to acquire him.

A nice move by Gainey, hopefully en route to some bigger news over the next few days. Metropolit is a rugged centreman with a 50+% stat in the faceoff circle; as a right-hander, we could use the help.

It’s unclear at this point whether Metropolit will play tonight in Philly wearing blue, white and red, but here’s hoping!
