Game 60: Canadiens 5 – Senators 3

Alex KovalevThe high-intensity, hard-working Alex Kovalev showed up against the Ottawa Senators last night after missing the past two games and – you guessed it – we won a game! With all of the drama surrounding the Habs this past week (the criminally-connected Kostitsyns and the Kovalev rumors) this game was an important one and many on the team stepped up to deliver a 5-3 victory.

Now, let’s keep things in context: Kovalev was great but one game doesn’t make up for his awful season. If he can turn it on so easily then he should be doing so more often; I’m personally rooting for last year’s Kovy to show up down the stretch. Halak made 44 saves for the win and this presents a goaltending dilemma: Carey Price is the keeper of the future but can’t seem to get it together after returning from injury, so does Halak keep starting? Let’s hope so.

And finally, these are the struggling Ottawa Senators that we defeated. We also proved that the defensive trap should not be in our playbook – after racking up a 4-0 lead we were outshot 22-4 in the third period, proving that we still have this tendency to take a lead (a rare lead) and then try to sit tight.

We get another crack at the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, a tougher team by far and our first real test following this unhappy week. GO HABS GO!
