Canadiens 3 – Hurricanes 2 (SO)

Octoer 28, 2008 @ Montreal

The Habs came into tonight’s game against the ‘Canes off of their first regulation loss of the season to the Ducks on Saturday night and you can bet they were wanting to be sure one didn’t become two, didn’t become three…

Carolina did strike first as Anton Babchuk put a deflected slapshot past Carey Price on the powerplay. It took the Habs 15 minutes or so to get into the swing of things before Alex Kovalev put a nice wrist shot over the shoulder of Cam Ward to tie the game. Only minutes later, while the Canadiens were enjoying a two-man advantage, a Carolina defenceman covered up the puck in front of Cam Ward to send Alex Tanguay on a penalty shot; he scored, beating Ward with a wrist shot under the arm and putting Montreal up 2-1 going into the first intermission.

The second period opened with alot of energy from both sides but a combination of back-and-forth play and solid goaltending from both Price and Ward kept the score at 2-1.

The third period opened with Matt Cullen tying the game only 40 seconds in and the action progressed from there. Carey Price made several key saves, including a point-blank slapshot off of the face, before he took a delay of game penalty to put the Habs on the defensive for the final two minutes. They pulled through, sending the game to overtime.

What a five minutes the overtime period was! The Canadiens ended up on the powerplay for the final half and they pounded shot after shot at Cam Ward. Ward was excellent, stopping nine shots. He couldn’t stop Saku Koivu in the shootout though, and Price chipped in a few excellent saves to give the Habs a 3-2 victory.
